Front: DONRUSS DIAMOND KINGS HOWARD JOHNSON Back: NO. 18 DONRUSS DIAMOND KINGS HOWARD JOHNSON Third Baseman Mets Had it not been for Kevin Mitchell and Will Clark, Howard Johnson would have had an easy path to the Most Valuable Player Award. Over the last three years, "HoJo" has developed into one of the National League's premier power hitters. The Mets awarded him a lucrative contract in the middle of last season. He is beginning to command considerable respect, so much so that he was named the starting third baseman on the National League All-Star team after Mike Schmidt announced his retirement. Johnson, a switch hitter the Mets obtained from the Detroit Tigers in 1985, offers speed as well as power. Last season, he became a member of the 30-30 Club (36 homers, 41 steals) for the second time in three years. He led the Mets in games played (153), at bats (571), runs scored (104), hits (164), doubles (41), home runs (36), RBI (101), walks (77), and slugging percentage (.559). A simply stellar year. ©1989 LEAF, INC. • MADE & PRINTED IN U.S.A. • PEREZ-STEELE GALLERIES
